WHERE ARE DICK AND HOLLY'S BOATS?
As many of you know, Dick Reynolds died tragically on 3/16/07 in a work related accident. While the last year and a half has been one of great difficulty and healing for Holly and her family, there is one piece of unfinished business that I'd like to get cleared up and that is the whereabouts of the two stock boats that Dick and Holly raced in so many times together. One is a kevlar Wenonah 18' Jensen and the other is a carbon Grasse River stock boat. Being a generous man, Dick often loaned these boats out to friends or other paddlers in need of them, and we have no idea if they were out on loan or just stolen from his storage area in the confusion after his death. At any rate, if anyone has any information on the whereabouts of either of these boats, please contact Marc Gillespie at 585-732-1024 or PDFMG@aol.com. No questions will be asked--Holly would just like the boats back. Thanks, Marc

Report on the NYMCRA sponsored Marathon Kayak Racing Clinic
On June 15th, a NYMCRA sponsored marathon kayak clinic was conducted on the Seneca River in Baldwinsville, NY. The clinic was oriented towards experienced racers with 11 skilled kayakers participating. The instructor was Mike Archambault of Mike Archambault Racing and the Pointe-Claire (Quebec) Kayak Club. Mike's clinic was conducted in three phases - 1. On-shore introduction and training, 2. On-water coaching, 3. On-shore summary and review. The phases created a learning environment that enabled the paddlers to individually benefit from the clinic in a group setting. The feedback from the participants was positive with several paddlers asking when the next clinic will be conducted. A short video of the clinic is posted on "youtube" at Kayak Racing Clinic for those that may be interested.

50/50 Raffle at the USPP
NYMCRA held the first of several 2008 fund raising 50/50 raffles at the USPP Spring Race. Scott Stenberg and Joan Henry sold raffle tickets before the race and later at the after-race dinner. The tickets were one dollar or six for five dollars with a total of $140 sold. The winning ticket was drawn immediately before the awards ceremony with a purse of $70. The winner was in attendance at the dinner and received the purse on the spot.
NYMCRA would like to thank everyone that participated in the raffle. The funds raised by the raffle help support the NYMCRA programs that make all of us winners in the marathon paddling world.

Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana Inc.

a chapter of Disabled Sports USA

I am organizing a team of 12 adaptive paddlers who will represent ECORA in the 2008 IVF World Sprints in Sacramento California, August 1-9 2008. Two of the paddlers are Iraq war veterans. I am seeking donations of United Airline frequent flyer miles to provide transportation for the paddlers.

Disabled Sports USA, the parent organization of Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana, has an agreement with United Airlines whereby DS/USA chapters can redeem charity miles for air tickets for athletes with disabilities. Please see Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana’s web site at: www.adaptivecanoeing.org to learn more about how to donate United Airline Frequent Flyer miles.

This is the first year that all races for IVF adaptive paddlers will be full medal events.

I sincerely thank everyone who has supported and assisted us in the past and made possible this historic first in the sport of outrigger canoeing.

Thank you,

Jan Whitaker

President, Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana

Hello Everyone!

The 2008 NYMCRA race directors' meeting has been set for Saturday January 19 at 11:00 AM at the Wildfire Restaurant in beautiful Vail Mills, NY. Vail Mills is located at the junction of routes 29 & 30 about five miles north of Amsterdam. The restaurant is about 100 yards north of the intersection. Click Here for a map. We will be ordering from the menu and paying individually. RSVP by Jan 10. egreiner1@yahoo.com

Unfortunately, we do not have a presentation this year. In lieu of that, I would like to have an open forum where directors can air their concerns about NYMCRA and the race schedule, ask questions of other directors and just generally share their expertise.

Be prepared to renew your race sponsor membership, $25 for the first race and $5 for each additional race.

Whether or not you plan to attend the meeting, please get your event's  information to Janet Findlay, jfindlay@igs.net, no later than January 10 so she can compile the schedule.
Please send her an email with the following info:

  Race name
  Date (day)
Distance, Location, Directions to the start
  Contact information
  Registration and start times
  Entry fee
  Short description

There will be a meeting of the NYMCRA BOD after the race directors' meeting to decide which races to include in the points series. If you would like your race to be considered for the points series, please send me an e-mail message to egreiner1@yahoo.com, indicating your interest and including your race info.

As always, every NYMCRA member is invited to sit in on the board meeting.

I hope to see as many of you there as possible. Have a great Holiday season and keep training!

Ed Greiner
