The Loss of A Paddling Icon

Dr. John Ayer

I received the following email from Julie Peluso this evening, the grandaughter of Dr. John Ayer

I am far removed from canoe racing, a sport I was active in growing up with my Grandfather.  My grandfather introduced me to canoe racing and we did countless races together over the years, primarily in NY.  His name would appear often if somebody could pull up USCA and NYCRA archives and even some not so old results, as he raced up until the last decade!  Dr. John Ayer was a tremendous athlete, involved in running, skiing, cycling, and canoe racing.  Because it was a passion we shared together, I thought it was important for me let the canoeing world know that he passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 91.  He was so fond of so many people in the canoe racing world and I came to realize at a young age that many were fond of him as well.

My grandfather was an incredible man and I thought there may be some way he could be mentioned on your website for those who knew him.  A Memorial Service will be held in his honor this Sunday, March 14th 2:00pm at The First Presbyterian Church in Skaneateles, New York.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to John’s friends and family.
